What tools do you use in your gaming?
« on: February 08, 2018, 02:09:15 AM »
I am conducting a (very) short survey about what tools people use in their gaming which will form the basis of a blog post towards the end of the months.

Let me know which tools you use and what you think of them in this survey: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/JM2DVL3

Thanks

Done. I will elaborate and note that I use a laptop when I GM; it serves as a perfectly good screen and I want the screen space. As a player, I use a Surface 3 for note-taking. It's convenient and not as in-the-way, and typed notes are way more useful than handwritten.

I have a bunch of sound effects and such, and keep meaning to use them, but haven't yet. I also played with some 3D rendering stuff for illustrations that I use rarely but would like time to do more with.

#1 software need during the game is combat tracking. But a very strong #2 is Inspiration Pad Pro. http://nbos.com/products/inspiration-pad-pro Lots of useful stuff for it http://forum.nbos.com/index.php?p=/categories/inspiration-pad-pro-general and http://www.nbos.com/nox/index.php?pcatid=48. Also, it's free, so you can't beat that. The generators are super easy to modify and customize for your own settings, and can be as simple or complex as you want. I use it as a name generator, a character description generator, a book generator, a tavern generator, etc etc.

The results are now in! Check them out on the ICE blog.

What do you think? Is there anything that we missed?

Man, I love the idea of an RM-centric Siri-clone where one could yell at their phone-app, “ICEy, LOOKUP Broadsword, AT20, RESULT ‘134’.  CRIT ‘66’” and up pops the spoken/verbose results out loud/on screen.

Hmmm...

Interesting results.  Regarding the random NPC generator, one could use NBOS software's Inspiration Pad Pro (it's freeware) & modify the included NPC Generator or write your own.

In fact, I'm a huge fan of NBOS' line of RPG software.  I use The Keep to keep track of multiple campaigns, Fractal Mapper to create maps & layouts, Astrosynthesis for universe-wide creation (especially for my Sci-Fi stuff) & I love their freeware Character Sheet Designer.  They are currently in beta development for a digital table-top gaming emmulator called Skwyre that has a lot fo potential.  The great thing is all the different programs integrate with each other.  They're the digital backbone of my worlds.

I really enjoyed the survey & I found the results interesting.  It would be neat to see how the ages of respondants match the use of tech vs. traditional pen & paper.  For reference, I'm 40 & have been playing RM since 1990.

I'm eagerly awaiting the day when my sons are old enough to play. There is hope yet!

Have you tried starting with things like Hero Kids (assuming that he's in the right age group anyway)?

He'll be 11 this spring.  But no, I haven't tried that.  Will give it a go, tho.  Thanks for the tip!

11 might be a bit on the old side - it's certainly at the upper end for Hero Kids. I'd also recommend Playground Adventures (a publisher); they publish for Hero Kids but also for Pathfinder & 5E and have some nice stuff.
