I don't use it myself, but would be interested in seeing what others thought of it too.

I'm surprised no-one else hasn't commented already - it's awesome!!!

The core Fantasy Grounds software was made for one of the most popular RPG systems so it goes about doing some things in a certain way but it was built to be moded and the official RMC mod does a great job most of the time but little things need to be entered manually from time to time.

It's biggest feature is the combat tracker - it tracks players wounds, stuns, bleeding/rnd etc as well as parry's, DB & OBs and it looks up the weapons tables and references the Crit tables too.

There is a learning curve if you want to GM a game (but that's true of Fantasy Grounds in general) but it's surprisingly hassle free for a player.

In order to play a game though you need to decide on the license to buy. It comes in 3 flavours: Ultimate, Regular or Free

  • Ultimate - If you buy the Ultimate license, your players can join your game using the free license or greater so it's a one-off cost for all the games you GM.
  • Regular - If you buy the Regular license, your players also need to at least buy the Regular license to join.
  • Demo/Free - With the Demo/Free version, you can only connect as a player to a GM who's using the Ultimate license.

On top of this, the GM will also need to buy the RMC module (but the players don't need to).

Just like any gaming session, there needs to be a bit of preparation (getting maps ready, player handouts, NPCs etc) and I can recommend trying some of the adventures they sell that has all that in the module so it can be loaded into Fantasy Grounds. I can recommend one of the Shadow World's newest adventure Tales from the Green Gryphon Inn that can actually be used as a town for any setting as it happens.

Popping over to the Fantasy Grounds RMC Forum will get you loads of answers or perhaps ask to join a session or two. :)

I, for one is using maptool from rptools, with my campaign that is a hybrid VTT/ PbP campaign using RMSS/RMFRP. I would use FG if a RMFRP version ever came out. In addition, we are using Combat Minion. With a large player base still playng RMSS/RMFRP it is a shame this system is no longer supported. RMU might fix that, but i suspect many players will stick to their system.

There is an unofficial RMFRP mod for the RMC ruleset that's available in the Fantasy Grounds Forums and I'm looking forward to RMU being released for Fantasy Grounds as well. :)

I'm looking forward to RMU, RMU for FG, and RMU for ERA  8)
I'll buy RMU tables for Combat Minion as well. I'm not sure my campaigns will be ported though, and this means I'm going to still run sessions in RMFRP for several months or yaers, even while new campaigns are started in RMU.
Thanks for the heads-up, I thought I had searched the forums, but I obviously missed everything unofficial ;) FG is definately more appealing to me now.

This is the one to be precise - RMFRP mod for RMC

You will still need to buy the RMC ruleset though.

So how does the combat tracking look to you? Does it automatically apply the critical like Combat Minion, or do you need to enter it?

I'm thinking of buying it, but I'd like a few more reviews before I pull the trigger.

the combat tracking is nearly as automated as Combat Minion in some ways and maybe a little more so in others.

The only draw back I have with Fantasy grounds is the mapping capabilities.

Though you can import any map you like, you can't create your own maps within it as it has really no map creation tools. This is one aspect that really keeps me running using Maptools.

there is mod for fantasy grounds called Enhanced images http://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?20231-Enhanced-Images-%28layers%29-for-FG-3-0-CoreRPG-%28and-rulesets-based-on-CoreRPG%29 that allows you to add another layer which only the GM has access where you can put movable objects including tile sets so you could mapp a dungeon on the fly but its so easy to drop a map or image into a session of fantasy grounds I find it easier to knock some up  a quick  map in another piece of software , drop it in the campaign image folder and its in the game I haven't bothered using it much
