« on: September 18, 2014, 10:05:27 AM »
there is a Skill in the 1990 Companion I called "Fluid Systems" Yet I can not find a description of this skill or the stats it uses. It is in the academic section.

Was companion I published before  blue-green-orange edition?
I  don't have SM CI as I thought that that material was  included in the  blue-green-orange edition (that I have).

I can't remember if  this skill was there but to me it sounds like it would be hydraulics (engineering/technical) and fluid dynamics (scientific).

Unfortunately I didn't buy SM until the B-G-O edition that Tommi mentioned, and I don't recall if that skill was in there or not (should know since my day job overlaps with those skills quite a bit (Chemical Engineering R&D), but it has been a long time since I've looked through the old SM books).

This is only a guess on my part, but I would guess Reasoning would likely be the most important stat.  Sorry I wasn't able to help out more, but if you have any  questions directly related to the application of such skills I might be able to help.

If I was to guess, I would guess it was either the modern skill of smithing, or a skill for creating and maintaining personal modern armor or a skill for maintaining armor for vehicles.

Sorry for the resurrection, but wanted a clarification.

Are you talking about the science called Fluidic Dynamics?

I don't know if it is related to the science of Fluid dynamics... The Skill in the book has no description in the Skill descriptions section.

My guess is that it probably is referring to Fluid Dynamics, as that is a branch of study in the chemical engineering field.

As an explanation (if that is what was intended), it is the study and mathematical understanding of the flow of materials (not only liquid but also other phases of matter, although liquid is the most commonly studied), as well as an understanding of the physics and theory that underlies such dynamic systems.  As stated, this is something that I deal with sometimes in my job, but if anyone has any questions regarding this that I can not answer, a coworker of mine and a member of the RMU playtest group that I GM has a PhD in this area (from MIT), so if I can't answer then I can try to get him involved in the discussion as he is extremely knowledgeable in this area.  While I work in the "Process Separations" discipline of Core R&D for my employer (thus we deal with chemical separations technologies and have our companies experts in that area (Distillation, Crystallization, Absorption, Adsorption, etc.) so we are familiar with fluid flow), he works in a "sister" group to the one I work in the "Fluid Mechanics and Mixing" discipline of core R&D, where such things are their area of expertise (the flow and mixing of chemicals) so he is one of our companies SME's ("Subject Matter Expert") in this field.
