Quoting directly from the August Briefing:
HARP Fantasy is back!
Join the new road to high adventure with HARP Fantasy. Enhanced, remastered, HARP Fantasy has drawn upon years of actual game play experience, fan feedback, and logical reasoning to improve the rules from the original 2003 and 2004 editions without compromising their playability.
Here’s your checklist of rules changes:
- The Professions have been rebalanced in terms of their professional abilities
- Flat 50 Development Points is the default for calculating Development Points
- Races have been better balanced in terms of stat bonuses, some racial abilities have been revised, and Humans now get Skill Flexibility (the ability to make a single skill in a NonFavored category Favored)
- Blood Talents have been rebalanced in terms of Development Point cost
- The Mandatory Subskills rule has been incorporated from HARP SF
- Four new Influence skills have been added from HARP SF
- New talents have been added from HARP SF and Development Point costs of existing Talents have been properly balanced
- The use of Spell Adders and Power Point Adders has been clarified
- Clarifications and improvements have been made to the rules for Light & Vision, Fighting Blind, Asphyxiation and Holding Breath, Drowning and Stat Loss
- Life Points have been removed and the Stun rules made consistent with HARP SF
- All of the spells have had their base costs and scaling options made consistent with the revised spell creation system (to be published in the enhanced College of Magics) and descriptions have been clarified in specific cases
- Herb and poison prices have been rationalized
- A new monster creation system has been used to rework the monster collection with some monsters being replaced with new creatures
- Several magic items have had their effects adjusted
- The guidance on customizing clerics and magic users has been revised to better fit with the rules given in the enhanced College of Magics and future envisaged sourcebooks.
- The Language Table and associated rules have been made consistent with HARP SF
- The “Non-Adventuring Professions†have been removed – these will return in in a future sourcebook in a form suitable for PCs
We have also improved the interior artwork, replacing virtually every filler piece with meaningful illustrations. You’ll love the new art.
Here's the link to the RPGNow page but read the rest of this Briefing first! -

This is a time-limited offer and will END on 15th September. Do not procrastinate, do not dither, just take advantage of it.
The pdf version is already available. Softcover and hardcover versions will become available as soon as OneBookShelf approves the print files.

HARP Fantasy is back!

Thank you!
Perfect timing! 8)
Best regards from Germany

Once more... ;)
If I use the search function in drivethru oder rpgnow and type "HARP",
Then the HARP Fantasy is not shown.
HARP SF and HARP SF extreme is listed, but not HARP Fantasy.
If I type "harp" and select the "HARP (system)" suggestion, then I am directed to a list which contains HARP fantasy.
But the search with keyword "harp" only fails, which is a pitty...
May be drivethru has forgotten to set this keyword...
Best regards
Frank
PS: have mercy with my english... ;)

Got it.

Well I bought the pdf straight away this morning. Really like the clean layout and the new art. The new minor changes in the system are also very nice. Really looking forward to the new Martial Law and the new monster creation system.
Now I just have to decide if the changes in HARP Fantasy warrants buying a new print book once that becomes available again. Guess it all comes down to my budget at the time since I already have a long list of ICE stuff to buy.

Glad to hear that you like it.

A key benefit of print-on-demand is that HARP Fantasy will never go out of print on you. So you can choose to buy when your budget permits.
OBS/LS has indicated that both the softcover and hardcover versions of HARP Fantasy made it through all their checks, so proof copies have now been ordered and will hopefully be with me in a week or so. Assuming there has been no glitch, I should be able to make the print versions available in the next couple of weeks.
Best wishes,
Nicholas

Excellent news, great book btw, really cleaned things up.
-
Got the book. Can't wait to start reading it. Will get the hardcover as soon as it's available: I have to say, as much as I enjoy the practicality of PDFs, nothing beats having a real book in one's hands.
Thanks very much for your time and efforts with this.
-
Unfortunately, it's been so long since I've used RPGNow I've forgotten my password and for some reason it wasn't on my list of usernames and passwords. I may have even forgotten which e-mail address I used with it. :(
EDIT: Looks like somehow I forgot the domain name when I clicked the "forgot your password" link the first time. Silly.
-
PLEASE! TAKE MY MONEY NOW!!!!! TAKE IT!
:laugh1:
-
I bought it yesterday. The rules tweaks are great and I like some of the new art.
I'm not all that big on the lack of borders and other artistic bits that made the book look unique. It has a bit more of a generic feel to it now, IMO.
-
Got it. Skimmed through it. Rated it.
There is something "new" about it, even though the changes doesn't seem to be too big.
Now I'm looking forward to the next re-done books, then the print versions.. and then the new stuff! I see a hint of a divine sourcebook, which I'm looking forward to. Hoping it opens for non-conventional way of treating religious cults... and such stuff :D the current system is good, but conventional rpg methods for treating pantheons, gods and the cosmos does not work well with the homebrewed setting I'm using.
Great job Nicholas +Team!

Ouch, I didn't know this limited time discount and already bought that PDF with normal $20 :o
But still, feeling good to think it as supporting GCP's efforts to revive ICE products ;)

Posted the notice on my website, and picked up the pdf. ;D

Keen! Thank you for the good news!
Two questions:
1) What will be the price of thePoD hardcover?
2) Given the short majority in favour of buying it at FLGSs, are there any plans at the moment to publish it that way?
(Also, that's just after I opened my birthday present from my beloved wife and found the Essentials CD. I'm doubly happy now.)
-
2) Given the short majority in favour of buying it at FLGSs, are there any plans at the moment to publish it that way?
What's FLGS? (excuse my ignorance).
PS - I also have the new HARP Fantasy book. ;)

The PoD softcover would be $26.65, the PoD hardcover would be $31.35 USD.

Depends on how well HARP Fantasy sells in pdf in the first few months of its release.

Ah - Thanks :)
If I were anywhere near a friendly local game store (or even in the same county as one), that'd be my choice too - but the internet is my only friend. :)

Although I am an RM fan through and through, I bought this as it won't break the bank and supports GCP.
When is the print on demand likely to be ready?
I have it in mind for my 9 year old son who "really really" wants to roleplay and also wants to GM (which he already does sans rules). Anyone have any experience in this regards, ie HARP for kids?

Print-on-demand will probably take two to three weeks - we have to fix the formatting errors, I then reupload the interior, OBS and LightningSource reprocess it which can take a week, then I have to order proof copies which have to be printed and shipped to me which can take a week. If no problems, I then release the PoD versions for sale.
Best wishes,
Nicholas

The problem is being worked on even as we speak:

Note the author of the original post. I think we can safely assume that making this work has the attention of the very highest levels of ICE.

To which my egregious lack of common sense prompts the question, "will HARP be published in FLGSs if the pdf sells very well (the reasoning being that others will buy it in book form) or if it doesn't (the reasoning being that its potential market who't have been exhausted yet)"?
Writing this, I feel the second option sounds silly. But still.

Thanks for the clarification, kreider204. (craggles, your ignorance needs no apologies as far as I'm concerned - it did take me some time to figure it out myself after first encountering it.)

Wow, how tough for you. Good thing lots of friends are waiting for you here!
Also. People have begun pointing out typos and stuff, and beginning to read the previous version of HARP has prompted ideas for tweaks. Should I suggest them here, in the "Tweaks for HARP Fantasy core rulebook" (http://www.ironcrown.com/ICEforums/index.php?topic=10587.0) thread, or later when another specific thread is up?

I keep a separate count of how all our products sell in different formats, so there's a count for pdf versus all four formats of HARP SF Xtreme for instance. It's one of my administrative/management tasks for GCP. If HARP Fantasy sells well and quickly in pdf, then that means it is likely that a good number would buy in print (some folk only want print, some want pdf & print) and in a reasonable time frame. No one wants to print 500 or 1000 copies or more and have them take many years to sell through.
I have access to the Mjolnir sales data and to imprint partners who will give honest answers as to whether a print run will make them and us money. If it's the case that HARP needs longer to rebuild its strength (i.e. needs more books to be released, get more momentum going from new books), then we can postpone a print run until it is in a healthier state.
Also. People have begun pointing out typos and stuff, and beginning to read the previous version of HARP has prompted ideas for tweaks. You may find that the tweaks have already been made to HARP Fantasy. The only changes that we will be making to HARP Fantasy at this point are formatting and typo correction. Likewise HARP Martial Law has been handed over to layout and so is closed to changes unless something absolutely critical is found.
Tweak suggestions for HARP College of Magics and HARP Loot: A Field Guide can still be made.
Best wishes,
Nicholas

I shall not procrastinate for much longer...
Before buying the pdf (I will also get the book in a FLGS), though, I'd like to know if the various typos spotted by my honorable fellow HARPers in the pdf will be corrected in a new version of said pdf and if so, when. (Not saying it should be one way or another; just curious.)
-
They will be updated in the PDF and the print copies will be of the new corrected version.
When PDFs are updated, you'll be able to download a newer version from RPGnow.
It'll be a couple of weeks at the earliest for the print books to go through the One Bookshelf system to be ready to be ordered but the PDF will be updated a lot sooner than that. :)

My review on RPG Now:
Disclosure: As a frequent ICE/GCP customer, I received this product at a reduced price. This has no bearing on my review, but it is worth noting.
This is the second edition (or third, depending on who you ask) of HARP, re-written to be compatible with HARP Sci-Fi. The changes are minor, but pervasive. Changes from the previous version include re-balancing of the races and professions, due to feedback from 8 years of playtesting.
Likes:
-The new typefaces are easy to read and there is new interior artwork.
-Will feel familiar to Rolemaster players, but plays fast enough to hold the interest of other gamers. (This is a big plus in mixed groups)
-A POD version is in the works. This might actually be the book that gets me to try print-on-demand.
-Single roll combat resolution! (A big plus for people who are not fans of Rolemaster).
-Very few typos or grammatical errors. (Because, as a matter of fact, I AM the grammar police. )
Dislikes:
-No Hyperlinks or bookmarks in the PDF.
-Because of balance changes, the new rules are not backwards-compatible with previously released products in this line. (Such as "College of Magics").
Overview: No system is perfect, but this one comes close. I can't wait for more monsters, spells, and professions in future releases. Generally speaking, any book that leaves me wanting more gets high marks.
Score: 4 out of 5 stars
-
Bought my copy looks great on my Nexus 7
Great book reminds me of my old MERP books
Spotted a couple format / typo errors like page 10 Available is hyphenated in the middle of a line. Those little errors always seem to sneak in at the last moment lol

As Craig indicated, these tiny glitches will all be fixed as long as they get spotted asap. There's a more vexatious formatting error that only appears in a print copy (both Craig and I have proof copies, Eric's are en-route to him), so we have to open the pdf to fix that, so we fix the lot in one fell swoop for pdf and POD. Anyone who has already bought the HARP Fantasy pdf, simply redownloads (no cost).
Best wishes,
Nicholas

OK, I tried to get it through RPGnow, but it would never finish the transaction. So, I went to DrivThru RPG and it cost me $20*. Is there a reason for this? The code # in the email did nothing for me, in fact it was said to be invalid or incorrect.
*I checked my account, and $20 was deducted for the transaction.
-
Aargh. There is discussion on the Briefing thread about this. You can either go in with the direct link to RPGNow or carefully replace the RPGNow link with the different domain It does work but you have sometimes to be stubborn to make sure it works and hit the right buttons to apply discounts.
Best wishes,
Nicholas

The direct link works. Putting in the code does not. I can confirm this, because I got my copy for $5. 8)

I'm still a bit unclear about whether we can point out typos, and where we're supposed to do that, so I'll just put it here, and let me know if it should go somewhere else (or not at all).
In the gnome's dark vision (lesser) description, I believe the example is wrong. I think it should say that the gnome in that example can see 40' (not 30') clearly ("twice as far as the light provides").

Yes, you can point typos though do it quickly - they are being collected on http://www.ironcrown.com/ICEforums/index.php?topic=11970.0. Craig is winding up his InDesign to do a glitch purge, though.

Yes - we're in the last days for corrections as I already have an initial list from Nicholas. :)

Wonderful news HARP2 is available. I'll snag my copy sometime today. Thanks for this guys!
One question: are you guys open to producing a conversion guide from HARP to HARP2? Other companies have provided a bridge product, such as what WotC did when they transition from 3 to 3.5 and this allows us to manually make corrections and whatnot in our HARP books so they're still useful at the table.
Thoughts?

One of the reasons for giving everyone a chance to buy the pdf at a 75% discount, so at least folk can replace their pdfs easily. There's a checklist in the new introduction indicating where the changes are in the book, but we had to adjust a lot of spells in order to get them to conform to our adjusted spell creation system, so that bit is genuinely pervasive.
No objection to anyone making a detailed list, but not sure that we'll get a chance to make that list anytime soon. I'm certainly not going to get a chance to do it. We've got lots more HARP and RM products demanding our attention as they jockey for publication release (which means that they all end up converging on my desk)
Best wishes,
Nicholas

I've been known to create lists/articles like that for the Guild Companion from time to time :) No promises though, I've got several competing projects that I'm looking at and haven't yet decided which one is going to get my attention.

Danke and done. :)

I snagged mine last night, looks great and really looking forward to running it at Winter War 2013 in January.
I guess my only gripe right off the bat is the weapons sizes are still off by my estimation. Having quarterstaves dealing the same damage potential as 2-h warhammers is nuts unless there's another advantage to wielding the warhammer such as armor penetration in the form of bonus OB vs. plate and chainmails. The simplified MERP style combat in one of the HARPERs Bazaars had various weapon attributes which I ported over to distinguish weapons. Maybe this could be incorporated into the new Martial Law.
Great work everyone on HARP2. The scenario for Winter War is set in Cyradon more than likely in Belynar but not sure yet. Eager to mix it up with HARP2.
Best!

Will the printed book have the same layout as the pdf? To be honest, I AM a bit disappointed of the very sparse layout and of some of the illustrations. I don't think that I will buy it in this form, though I have every RM/RM2/RMC/RMSS/RMFRP/MERP/Cyberspace/Spacemaster/Spacemaster Privateer/ and of course HARP Book in print in my collection. This is 2012 and I expect the presentation of a printed book to reach higher standards than in the 80s or 90s.
Sorry, no offense meant.
-
...To be honest, I AM a bit disappointed of the very sparse layout...
I definitely prefer a more 'ornate' layout myself like the Shadow World Atlas 4 and even when it's more subtle like the the original HARP Fantasy book but that has the unfortunate side-effect of increasing page count - perhaps this was the deciding factor for the book?
-
A good layout is not only nice to look at, it also helps sorting and searching through complex texts, gives anchorpoints (sorry, english is not my main language, if one or the other word does not make sense, please fill with one of your own :-) ) for the direction your eyes wander over the pages and helps the reader to locate himself in the diverse layers of complex texts like an rpg.
For instance: the layout of RMFRP is not one of my favourites, but it helps extremely while "learning" the rules. The german RMFRP - which has a nicer-to-look-at layout - lacks this help due to indifferent definition of the headline structure (there is a definition, it is just not really recognizable while reading).
Imo, a complex game like HARP or RM should always try to be as understandable/learnable as possible - and a structured and good looking layout helps enormously - even if it has some more pages then.

We can wait for the corrected HARP layout to see how that turns out - hopefully some of that will be fixed.

The pdf version is in the process of having various corrections made to the layout. Once that is completed, it will be the corrected version that goes to print-on-demand.
As for the artwork, this is a matter of personal opinion - it's all in the eye of the beholder. What we have done is replace the endless recycling of filler pieces (i think the original HARP used the same 3 or 4 fillers over twenty times) and of other pieces, so you do have something new and frequently germane to nearby text to look at.
As for ornateness and borders and all that jazz, some of those simply don't work with OBS/Lightning Source printing constraints so they are a non-starter and they can seriously bloat page count. Consider RM Classic books and their RM2 originals. Push page count unnecessarily high and print-on-demand prices / normal print runs can hit tipping points for fans and us. So we're going for a leaner look rather than too much stuff in the layout.
Best wishes,
Nicholas
-
I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but I prefer a sparse and less "decorated" appearance to a book. The less artwork, the better - it helps me to focus more on the rules and the world I'm envisioning in my mind.
And, while I'm at it, on a related note, I feel there are too many different typefaces in play in the current edition of HARP. The layout would have a much less 'busy' appearance if there were just two typefaces used.
As I count it, there are at least six distinct type faces in the current HARP design:
1. there's the sort of celtic 'uncial' style used for the title
2. there's the Optima-esque face used in the TOC
3. there's the standard serif face used in body text
4. another decorative title style used for subheads
5. another distinct decorative style, used for examples
6. yet another (!) decorative title style used in the footer
These should be condensed down to two overall families, in my opinion.
Whatever face is used for the body can be used for subheads and examples (just bold/enlarge, and italicize, respectively). Footer material should be in the same typeface as the body text. Pick one decorative title style, and use it sparingly. The result is a more readable, timeless style that enhances rather than detracts from the reading experience.
I'm sure that to many, this is nitpicking. It's just my opinion as a typographical purist who prefers a classic, understated approach to book design.
</soapbox-mode>
-
Funny you should mention this jeddak, I'm studying this exact same thing for my typography assignment, and what you say is correct by my textbooks. Apparently the old style family is best for extensive amounts of body copy, such as Goudy, Palatino, Times, Baskerville and Garamond etc.
Can't say I agree with you on the less artwork though ;) ;D
-
I agree with jeddak too. I think there are a little bit too many typefaces. I prefer the simpler looking ones as they are easier to read. I also liked the original layout with parts of text in an enclosing frame (even though Nicholas gave the reason why it was changed). :)
-
You can't please everyone with layout. I wouldn't have used Papyrus for the example text, but it's hardly a dealbreaker.
That said, I don't think all caps is a good choice for the TOC. It's harder to scan than mixed case, and stylistically it doesn't seem to go with the rest of the book. I would use the same font and style as the index, which is perfectly readable.
And more importantly for a PDF, I would really like to see links. I would prefer a sidebar type TOC with links to all the sections (not just links from clicking items on the TOC pages) because it's more versatile for navigating through the text (and also better supported by the Acrobat Reader on my tablet...).
Links from an index are less important, since a PDF has a search function not available in a printed book.
-
I'm redoing the layout for the HARP Fantasy core book and a lot of these issues are going to be cleared up.
The designer will then use my templates to work on the rest of the HARP Fantasy books so hopefully this won't happen again.
The ToC will be more readable and have links and so will future books by the way.
(Papyrus wouldn't have been my first choice either but that's staying in) ;)
So there's no need to comment on the layout until the updated PDF comes out.
But again, you can't please everyone. :)
-
Wow! Thanks craggles. I'm sure it's a lot of work.

Print-on-demand will probably take two to three weeks ...
Forgive me and my bugging request... ;)
Do you have any new information or an estimated date of delivery?
Best wishes!

-
@jeddak, don't assume that your opinion is minority, it might not be. That said, I like pretty . . . until pretty distracts from readability, which is what I thought somewhat of original HARP's borders, and thought a certain edition of a different game went way overboard with the decoration.
Anyway, my other issues are discussed in the topic about formatting errors.

Do you have any new information or an estimated date of delivery?
Best wishes!
Frank
I need Craig to finish the fixing up of the layout, I then hand him the small number of content changes, we shake vigorously and then we upload into OneBookShelf and we go through the checking process of physical copies.
Best wishes,
Nicholas

Hey guys,
it's been a lot of time i didn't take some news from the forum and now i discover ther's a new revised version of the Harp corebook...hmmm very interesting.
I'd like to buy the pdf but i don't how to find; can someone help me???
I'm very curious and i want to see what ICE people did. I hope they didn't make the same mistake White Wolf did with the entire WoD...They made a lot of big changes and turned different beautiful games (Vampire: the masquerade, Werewolf:the reckoning, etc) in terrible odd unplayable stuff!!! Wasted paper.
Hope this ain't the case.
Waiting for someone's answers
Greet everybody

fear not! every change made is beneficial!
and whats better is that they clearly marked the changes and left the old rules in there so you can see how/why it was changed.

Just put the Briefing up for March. Our layout guru got word that he had to go for surgery and there wasn't enough time to complete the corrections and go through an OBS print test cycle, so files are in transit to another layout guru, who will finish the work and then we proceed with Martial Law and College of Magics. It was a bolt from the blue for the layout guru as well. We're continuing to make progress on getting more products in a fit state for entry into layout.
Best wishes,
Nicholas

There are important things that get in the way of desired things. If his health is fine, then having to wait for a few weeks (or months) more is a secondary problem.
