Skill question(s)
« on: November 11, 2009, 06:14:03 PM »
I have a series of questions concerning certain skills.

First off, I wonder about planetology. The skill states that it covers three distinct types of knowledge; geology, oceanography and meteorology. Should this skill be developed seperately for each of these schools of knowledge, or does the skill cover all of them equally?

I am no expert but IMO it would provide basic knowledge in each of those areas where as if you developed the skill separately then you would have an emphasis in that area and skill rolls would be easier to achieve. ie a hard maneuver is reduced to a medium maneuver or what ever is the difficulty right below it on the chart.

Rule #0: A GM has the right to change any rule in a book to fit their game.
Role Play not Roll Play.
Use a System to tell the story do not let the system play you.

This depends on the SysOp. If the SysOp prefers to keep the game in a more space opera feel, then single-skill Planetology is the way to go. If the SysOp wants much more focus on the science, then splitting the various sciences up into subsciences is the way to go, so Planetology would then be either 3 distinct skills or a skill with mandatory subskills and the character chooses one discipline as primary subskill.

Best wishes,

If I opt to go for the second version, then what would you put the sub-skill penalty at? -20 or -40? I mean, these penalties would probably vary from planetology and biology (which I also believe contains a hint towards specialisation), and the different specialities within these skills... so I guess its my discretion then (since I am, as per usual, the gm/sysop).

I would suggest a -40 penalty if you are going the subskill route.
