Zero Rank Skills - Stat mods?
« on: June 09, 2017, 10:04:48 AM »
All,

Question regarding character skills without ranks.  I know that unskilled checks are at -25, but do you apply stat mods to roll?  If so, does that mean you need to list most (all) skills on your character sheet so you understand the true totals?

I do exactly that.

I only use a total of about 45 skills. I never went down the skill bloat route of RM2 so my character sheets have all the skills and stat mods and armour penalties etc. listed for each skill.

Yes, and I think that is according to the Rules As Written: you do apply the stat mods even if you have no skill. So a person who is ridiculously strong and agile can be naturally better with a sword than someone who has some training but is weak and stiff.

thanks for the feed back, that makes sense. I am working on hoisting a game online (probably roll20) and was looking to keep the macro mashing to a minimum. I had considered just an unskilled macro roll at -25, but now I might consider breaking it down to "unskilled MM", "unskilled combat", "social combat", etc and include some common stat combos plus the -25.

We have always used the stat mods in our games but do not give level bonuses unless the character has a level of skill.

Keep in mind, there is also a list of skills that you cannot attempt at all without at least one rank in it (RM2).  Surgery, Second Aid, Planar Travel, Astral Projection, etc.  It's a good sized list and something you may want to keep in the back of your mind as all.  I'll see if I can find that list for you when I get home.

Actually if a character wants to try surgery without the skill or proper equipment for that matter I would let them go for it. The odds are highly in favour of a critical failure.
