Bladestorm 2nd Edition
« on: October 18, 2016, 07:48:24 AM »
So this has now been released, and I was wondering whether the main rulebook is generic, or aimed at Folenn and Shadow World.

I am happy to say that the Campaign Rules of 2nd Edition indeed revisit the continent of Folenn. Credit is given to Shadow World and the works of Mr. Amthor that made it possible. The old box set included a terrain and a political map. These two were merged into a new combined map (that took more effort than expected) that allows players quick reference of where their scenarios actually take place.
Contrary to First Edition, the scenarios do not involve themselves with politics, but rather put the adventuring parties (who seek the fallen treasures of infamous Bladestorms) at odds with personalities at new and old locations (which previously appeared in the old Sourcebook).

Since Folenn is part of Kulthea, you will find some races familiar like Garks/Krals, Lugrok and Hirazi. However, the rules have been streamlined to integrate with any fantasy setting. The entire magic section was redone to stay true to Rolemaster spells and their effects. The introduction of Rolemaster professions makes it also easier to use the system for what it was initially intended for: Manage large scale rpg battles with scaled down skirmish rules.

I am very pleased to report that the hardcover premium version has just become available at RPGNow. Like the PDF, the book is realized in full color, so if you rather prefer the touch of paper compared to the digital file, it's definitely worth it.

Excellent. Got a gift card from work, and now I know what I am going to use it on.
Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Scratch that. Power attracts the corruptible.

Rules should not replace the brain and thinking.

So can anyone tell me more about this? I mean, can you use your own RM pcs in this system? What changes have been made for personal level conflict?

Hi there,

I can help you out, I hope =)

Yes, Bladestorm was invented to serve as a quicker way to solve battles that would be too time consuming under normal Rolemaster rules. The Appendix chapters contain conversion rules for regular player characters that allow you to build an abstract, smaller representation of the fully fledged pc.

Personal level combat is condensed to the main RM dynamics. Each combatant has a Defense value which represents DB in Rolemaster. An attack has to exceed this number in order to be successfull.
The weapon and a characters weapon skill are merged into an Attack Value which consists of a number of dice (D6s and D10s) and - if it's a good fighter - a bonus for the attack.
The principles for magic combat are also condensed Rolemaster mechanics. Bladestorm differs between directed and undirected spell attacks. The former one going against the Defense value, the latter one requiring a resistance roll by the attacked combatant.

Everything beyond these basics are tabletop style skirmish rules.

Thanks for the info!

So in your opinion could you switch to this system for large RM fights and then back to the rpg fir normal stuff?

Yes, you can definitely do that. Out of convenience, I would recommend to end the Bladestorm battle at a point where the party can rest and get some healing. So, when going back into RPG-mode, your group will have their restored characters to continue the adventure.

As a GM, you can even use part of the Campaign Rules to deal with party members that were "killed" during the larger skirmish. Chapter C2.4 "After the Game" let's you roll on two charts that offer ideas on what happened with the defeated party members. Chances for survival are pretty good.
