Spell classes and casting time/activity
« on: May 04, 2015, 07:50:04 AM »
In our setting we have a mentalist who fights with swords, he uses haste.
So can he haste him self and fight same round?
And what about all the semi spell user combat spells. combat I etc... hammer strike.. if the caster is high enough lvl, can he then cast it and fight same round?
What is your definiton of a * spell and class I spell?
It now is  in our setting that a combat I takes one round to cast, meaning the user cant fight the round he casts it... how will a dervish and a monk work if this is the case?

a * means a spell costs 10% or perhaps nothing to cast in a round, depending on which initiative system you are using.

Normally you can just cast one spell per round.

A class I spell simply requires no time to prepare, so it just requires the time to cast. This takes usually 75% of a round.

So an instantaneous spell and an attack can go together in a round, but a class I spell and an attack cannot be used together in a round.

I agree with VladD but when haste is introduced the remaining 25% activity is doubled to give 50% activity so I think you can get a 50% OB attack in, whilst hasted.

I cannot check it, but is the Mentalism Speed list not all Instantaneous? If not then it costs a round of Haste but you will get a -50% attack.

We have always gone with it takes real time to gather/manipulate the power for a spell to be cast so no more than one being cast in a 10 second round. The extra action percentage because of haste does not effect this as the power to process into a spell effect is fixed.
We also tend to impose Stress criticals after a couple of rounds of haste on the one hasted.

We have always said that the actual  casting cannot be speeded up with haste. If you cast haste on a chef a cake wouldn't bake any faster. The remaining activity percentage though is doubled so they can go on after casting to do more.

I don't use stress criticals. The PCs have enough to worry about without stress too. What next health and safety criticals?

In a box precariously balanced on top of a filing cabinet and only reachable by standing on a chair.

But you are missing out on some awesome crits!!!  And there is beneficial stress too.  That sudden blast of adrenaline inspires mere mortal men to feats worthy of odes that bards sings for decades.

Then again.... the stress crits are really funny :D

*-Just a note... aren't ALL of the RM2 Crit tables "Health and Safety" crits?
