What are players' worst habits?
« on: January 26, 2017, 06:31:10 AM »
What do you think are tabletop roleplaying players' worst habits? I've put together a little survey to collate responses (which I will then publish) or just have your say in this thread.

https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/QBKT736

N.B. This survey has now been closed. You can read the results on the Iron Crown blog. Feel free to continue to share your thoughts on this thread though.

A few items that seem to be missing.

Lack of hygiene.

Excessive off topic discussion.

Lack of preparedness. I.e. no dice, paper, pencil, or even character sheet.

Mooching snacks of others while never bringing their own.

Whining about how they can't afford to pay for game books because they are too expensive...right after they pay $50 for their fast food delivery on their brand new iPhone/Android.

Every character being a pyromaniac.

Bringing politics to a game.

I took the survey and added something like:
when they have been waiting all round for their turn to prepare and decide what to do and when it's their turn they take a long time to act.

A toss up, between habitually showing up late, and talking so much that no one else gets a word in edgewise.

Some non-gamers might suggest that a game players worst habit is gaming.  This, of course, is nonsense.   ???

Players not knowing their characters' abilities
Players not paying attention to party planning during a session
Player A talking over player B when the GM is trying to talk to B
Players who continually "fight the world" - meaning, a GM gives you a world, and context. You should be able to make a character that fits, so don't make a Greek charioteer character in a Tolkienesque world.
GMs who frequently railroad the party. (Sometimes plot dictates actions, but I've played campaigns where "options" are presented, but only one is allowed. Over, and over.)

We ask the hard questions here, because they keep us too busy to worry about the hard questions in the real world, and we can go with the answers we like the best.

1)  Being consistently late.
2)  Double booking and then only giving an excuse a shortly before the game.
3)  Taking forever to "settle down" to the game.
4)  Not remembering what "happened last time", or "remembering it differently" usually to the great benefit of their character.

If I had to pick one I'd say flatulence.

Everything else is intermittent enough, I can live with system unfamiliarity and a bunch of the others mentioned here but when one of our players is "on his game" for the night it can clear a room.
