Attack tables for the Depression Criticals, RM Companion III
« on: March 23, 2017, 10:33:05 AM »
Hello fellows,

I always wondered if there were Attack tables for the Depression Criticals, in the RM Companion III. Lately, I thought that the Shockbolt attack table could be used with this Critical table for the spells of the Evil Mentalist Base List, Mind Disease, even though they are Base attack spells. Too powerful?

Regards,
DW

Ooooh. Depression crits are fun!

I'll take a look when I get home.  I've used them in the past, but I forget what the circumstances were.

I only recall one instance where we used Depression crits, but we started a house rule of anyone taking more than 50% of HP in one blow takes a C-Stress Crit.  75% = D-Stress crit.  90% or worse = E-stress crit.

Any prolonged stressful action gave stress crits too such as carrying an unconscious player out of danger, while being chased by enemies for several rounds.

cowardice the better part of judgment,
let's all be heroes and run away!

I used them for some Undead attacks, especially ghosts and liches.
Darn that salt pork!

In the E.C., dark elemental attacks cause depression secondary criticals.
The world was then consumed by darkness, and mankind was devoured alive and cast into hell, led by a jubilant 紗羽. She rejoiced in being able to continue serving the gods, thus perpetuating her travels across worlds to destroy them. She looked at her doll and, remembering their promises, told her: "You see, my dear, we succeeded! We've become legends! We've become villains! We've become witches!" She then laughed with a joyful, childlike laughter, just as she kept doing for all of eternity.

Shadowblade, a Nightblade character in the old epic campaign I ran had a broadsword named Death-Shade that inflicted additional Cold and Depression criticals.

"Well, the Slash and Cold damage didn't kill him, but he did lose his will to live."

Yeah, I was thinking of using them for Undead attacks who are shapeless and whose fear projection is thus greater. I rekoned it would be a good addition to MERP's 2E rules of detecting magic in the PbP I'm running.

I still don't know how they can be fought being damned shapeless spirits.
I took the ideas from the 'Watchers' of Minas Morgul and Sauron in the First Age.

'Sauron was become now a sorceror of dreadful power, master of shadows and of phantoms, foul in wisdom, cruel in strength, misshaping what he touched, twisting what he ruled, lord of werewolves; his dominion was torment. He took Minas Tirith by assault, for a dark cloud of fear fell upon those that defended it; and Orodreth was driven out, and fled to Nargothrond.'

I'll have to check the EC, Olf, for dark elementals. Thanks for your answers!

In addition to the EC, in the RoCo. VII, the shadowbolt inflicts cold, aether and depression criticals, whilst the shadowfire bolt inflicts cold, electricity and depression criticals.

red skeleton joke/pun attacks.
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die.

We used to attach them to the fear effects of dragons.
