Title: Where will you buy your HARP Fantasy?
Post by: NicholasHMCaldwell on July 05, 2012, 04:23:50 AM
As I prepare to make final checks on the HARP Fantasy layout, we would like (just as with unified Rolemaster) to get your input on where you would expect to purchase print versions of HARP. It's been a very long time since anything for HARP has been available in distribution, so we need to gather data on what would be a sensible print run, hence time for a poll as one data point.

Once again, pdf versions of HARP Fantasy will be available via OneBookShelf as will print-on-demand versions.

Best wishes,
Nicholas

Personally I'd prefer an online retailer, but I'd try OneBookShelf if I could not get the books at any online retailer.

Now, I chose #2 because I would prefer to pick it up in a store, but I am OK with ordering it on-line, as well. (Either from OnebooksShelf or somewhere else.)

Around me there aren't that many physical gaming stores, and the ones that do exist are in parts of the city I don't like driving in. So I'll order straight from ICE or use some other online store.

Same price and quality from OneBookShelf as in store?

I checked both retailer and POD option.

Normally I try to get the books from a local retailer to cut down on the shipping costs, but lately I have often wanted to get the option where you can get both the PDF and Print at a single cost so I am a bit divided on which I will use most in the future.
ICE products have always been hard to come by in Sweden. Had huge problems when I wanted to get RMC books when they where available, RMSS/FRP book where easier to get though.

I do love to have pdf copies of the books I use on my computer so I don't have to carry my whole library of books when prepping adventures. But we do still use the dead tree versions at the gaming table since we feel that computers remove the attention from the game. Probably will lean towards the PoD option unless I can get the product more locally and download the PDF from another source at a cheaper cost. It all comes down to the price.

I voted for my FLGS as my preferred source for a printed HARP Fantasy book.  However I will probably get a pdf copy as well and am certainly not opposed to POD if that is what your business case dictates.

I have been waiting for HARP to be available again!! I will go with the pdf and print. Just need to figure out the screen capture part that was on one of the other treads.

I want a printed version, I'd prefer it not to be PoD, but I'll take a PoD as well, especially since I have no local store.

Print on Demand works well for HARP Sci-Fi, why expose yourselves to the excessive cost of distribution to shops. Keep the material coming and I will purchase online.

I checked FLGS, as well as Something Else, as I also buy the PDFs.

The local store in town don't really have any rpgs anymore, just tons and tons of board games and lego... and of course those terrible, horrible ccgs. I order online only (have been for some time), and OBS is as good as any. If amazon had it that would be even better, but pod is way better than pdf-only. I like the feel of dead tree in my hands. Although a kindle version could be cool :P

I doubt I'll ever buy a printed version of any gaming book. PDF all the way for me.

Well, I'm a special case. Ever since I asked her to buy me a board game for Christmas, my mother-in-law has been enjoying her bi-yearly trips to the FLGS (her town), because she felt those people were awfully nice. (Plus, as she put it, she "finally understood what planet [I ] come from".) And as a general rule, I prefer buying from a FLGS anyway.

So yeah, I'd love to ask her for a copy of the new HARP for my next birthday. (I'm elaborating there (http://www.ironcrown.com/ICEforums/index.php?topic=10586.msg150876#msg150876) as it seems more relevant. I hope I got that right.)

OMG! That is so cute. I don't think my mother ever got it. (Or cared for it.) But that is fantastic. Go M-I-L!

It will be available by pdf and print-on-demand first. We hope to get it into FLGS, but we need to come to a conclusion as to what level of demand there is as that requires some sort of print run and neither we nor our printing partner want to print too many.

Best wishes,
Nicholas

I quick question of mine:

Will the impending HARP Fantasy book include the new monster creation rules, or is that slated for the update to Monsters A Field Guide?

If it is I may have to skip breakfast for a couple weeks to make sure I have the PDF sooner rather than later.

Man Gen Con got a lot more expensive when my wife, daughter and niece all decided it was fun too and want to go.  :D

HARP Fantasy has monsters created using the new rules, but not the monster creation system itself.

Best wishes,
Nicholas

I'll go for the PDF, and if it still suits our gaming style I'll go for the PoD !!

Don't kill more trees than necesary nor don't expend money or resources in distribution.

Just my thoughts.   :D

I voted PDF's however I do love a good book to flick through.
When all three source books are done Im probly going to fork out to get them as well as the PDF's

so here's my suggestion.  sell the hardcover/paperback editions with unique serial keys (ala PC games) that we can then use to
verify ownership and allow us to download the PDF's for free as needed.

better yet, make is so that you have to register the serial key through this forum to access your pdf will also add members to the forum and help direct players to this wealth of a resource. I for one am aware of at leasta  couple of gaming groups who own ICe products and have no idea that thsee forums even exist.

Exact same question.
The PDF is great, but nothing beats a real book.

I agree, nothing beats a real book. It is easier to keep track of pages and flip between them much quicker than a PDF. Don't get me wrong PDF's are real handy but not practical in all situations. I actually prefer to purchase from a local gaming store. The one near me needs a lot of support to stay open. The owner is still reluctant to place my ads for HARP demos/events because it isn't a game he actually sells in store. He wants people to play games at his store that he sells so he can make money to stay open.  I remember when there was a gaming store in every mall, the good old days.
I did purchase both the PDF and soft covers of Martial Law and HARP Fantasy, I am awaiting College of Magics in POD version.

Oh and by the way, not everyone owns a PC or a tablet/laptop, so the printed books in store are great for people like that. One of my players only has a smart phone to view the PDF versions.

I buy both pdf and the book (generally hard cover). I can't really read a pdf, so I need the book for that but a pdf travels real easy and you can search it if your looking for something that's not in the index. Quite useful.

I just bought the PDF version yesterday.  From what I have read so far, it doesn't look too different from the older version.  Once we get our furlough situation straightened out, I will be buying Martial Law and College of Magics as well.   :)

Unfortunately, we don't have a local gaming store in the area, so I will have to stick to ording the PDFs from RPGNow/DriveThruRPG.

If you want hardcopy you can also buy via print on demand from RPGNow and DriveThruRPG.

When I asked about High Adventure Role-Playing at my local game store they advised that if I liked High Adventure type games I should try D&D!

Purchased PDF online through Drive Thru RPG and printed a nice spiral bound copy (for easy access) at my local office supplies store.

For now unfortunately RPGNow and DriveThruRPG are the solutions available to those of you who want the ICE products.  We're looking into options to get this out to the FLGS brick and mortar sites as that helps promote products and facilitates in store demo's and gaming - but many of those solutions come with high cost labor, storage, and capital investment.  We are still looking at it though, and will keep you advised when we have something ready to go.

Although there are two dedicated games shops in my area, the best best in the Ann Arbor, MI area would be Vault of Midnight, an "everything hobby" shop. This is mostly because I dislike the location and owner of one game shop, and the tight squeeze of the other.

I bought the PDFs from RPGNow, because being argentinian it's nearly impossible to get them in physical books.

I bought mine a couple of months ago now from drivethruprg. I will buy all my HARP from there an all in pdf format.

Finally made up my mind and ordered HARP Fantasy and Folkways POD hardcopies from drivethru (didn't order the pdfs; usually I do, but I find the pricing for the print/pdf package a little to steep, and print is definitely a must for me). It's a pity that there still seems to be no option for retailers to stock printed ICE products; I'm actually the co-owner of a small sf/fantasy book/rpg shop, and if it should turn out that HARP works for me as a system, I would really like to be able to sell it as well.

Had them in my mail yesterday - I've already had a cursory look at both books and am quite happy. Seems better organized than what I've seen in HARP Lite, and I also like how there are sidebars/boxes that explain the reasoning behind certain options and recommendations. The artwort is a little sub par, but I can live with that.
