Well, I also grant some goodies to players that involve in the Story by more than just showing up, too, but if there is no player doing that, it is not quite helpful to award someone who does not exist. 
But what the heck, as long as all are having fun, there is no immediate need for background stories, is there?

Well, yes and no imho as if everyone had a background you'd probably have more fun...

I could not agree more. But I would rather have at least some fun with my friends, than doing without.
