Title: Some artworks
Post by: -Dain- on June 03, 2009, 06:56:04 PM
Hi,
I've recently done some artworks for my adventures and wanted to share them with you. I must admit that ICE artworks from Rolemaster and MERP range have always been my favorite. I don't like much the new artworks we can find now, made with Bryce/Photoshop. I much prefer the black and white style, old school illustrations.
I didn't know where to post them so, sorry if it's the wrong area.

I hope you will like them ;)

I will definetly use them, with your permission!

Fantastic, that's exactly the kind of artwork I love most. The maps look so much better than any CC3 map and the rest is also more than great.

Do you also draw portraits?

Stunningly beautiful!!!   ;D

I love them a LOT!!!

They are reminiscent of the old school adventure modules but far superior!!

..and in case you were left with any doubt, the answer is 'yes' - I do want to see more!  ;)

Thanks for your comments, it's always a pleasure to hear they can be used by somebody else. Feel free to use them, print them, whatever you want to use them for. No copyright, just happy to help the rpg community.

I will post the rest, even if they can be not as good as these ones. They are older and I must confess I wasn't at the same skill level.
But I still work on new maps/ artworks and hope you will like them.

More to come soon...

Don't let that bother you. I don't share these artworks for any contract or anything. Just because I want to share, that's it.
Actually, my rewards ARE your positive opinions. When I read something nice, that gives me energy to do more ;)
As usual, as long as I get good feedback, I guess I won't stop sharing them :D

My only comment would be about the sea - I would reduce the texture of the land under the sea a bit.

I think the colours used are excellent too! :)

No most of the stuff I have seen is from their mag and the maps that come with it. I will try and find some.

 Some links maybe
1) Ocean map links [to get idea on bottom topography]
2) island map links [to get interaction of land mass and water]
3) Sailing maps
4) military maps as in general they are the most accurate of all

Some months ago I sent you the draft for a HARP campaign that I wanted to publish on TGC, so that many from the ICE community would have free access to the campaign. At that time you could not spare the time for painting some maps for this adventure. If that has changed now, it would still be cool if you could provide (part of) the artwork for that campaign...

Title: Re: Some artworks
Post by: -Dain- on April 24, 2013, 02:02:01 AM
Thanks guys, that keeps the motivation high ;)

About the software:
The Skyship has been done with technical pens like this, from Faber Castell (http://www.faber-castell.co.uk/40832/Products/Technical-Drawing/Technical-drawing-product-line/fcv2_index.aspx).
When I'm not using them, I use a graphic tablet Intuos 3 with photosho, but still draw by hand.
Sometimes, I go with pure photoshop tools and realize something like the one in color in my gallery, called Trenth. Have a look on my deviantArt page, it's on my signature. ;)
I'm glad you like them  :)
Title: Re: Some artworks

Does that city have a background, name and setting?
The city is actually one of the semi-pro rpg called Nothingness. There was a map of it, but small and kept simple.
The port city is a commercial one, and where an elite martial order was born. The order now works as an independent force and helps the city against corsairs and pirates. Guilds are powerful and taking the power over a prince who lives there.
I don't know much about it apart that, I'm more focused on the maps ^^
There are about 15 other cities that I'll like to map as well, so I guess you're gonna see me for a while still.

What do you think of this style? Not Belynar yet, but will work on it straight after ;)

I think it's a great style!!!! :)

Is it all an island? I think the broken water ripples need to go all the way around or have a faint outline of any adjoining lands.

Thanks,
It's an island/ continent, indeed, as much as Australia can be seen as an island ^^

About the ripples, I'm toying with the idea. It's gonna be all around obviously in the end. I'm still wondering whether it'll be better to use this style or another, like clouds of 1pix dots with various density, woodcut style waves, texture etc.

Yeah, that is really good. Throw some color and a little more detail and we got ourselves a winna!

Very nice work. I like how the mountain chains turned out (always had problems with that myself).

I love the overall look... but something seems to make the apparent perspective of the flatlands, lakes etc. slightly disagree with the apparent perspective of the mountains. I'm not sure what it is, and I may be fooling myself, but it's as if you're looking at the flats more straight down, and the mountains at more of an oblique.

Yeah, i will certainly consider making one in color. I've got quite some inspiration pictures in store. We'll see how it goes.

There are a lot of details that need to be added. I'm still in the early process, figuring out what to add, what style to choose for forests, hills, plains, shores etc.. Consistency of the isometric view is one of the things I need to polish.
Well spotted anyway, your eyes were absolutely right :P

Its a new take on the Fenlon style; which is a big plus! I love those maps where you can spot the little details and perhaps describe mountain ranges the players approach based on the graphics.

But as always, your style pops and is crystal clear, which I like. With color (but not too much) I'm sure your new style will stand out among many.

A small update before my move to Italy

Just a small addition to figure out what style to use. Grayscale so far but will be in color eventually.
Enjoy!

I like it. The perspective is starting to come more into line too.

However, you do realize that both of your seas/large lakes will be heavily salt, since neither has any outlet. Personally I would decide that the one to the NW would be so salty you can't possibly sink in it, but I'd put an outlet leading ESE from the other one to the ocean. YMMV.

Also, the current map leaves nearly half the continent (NE) with no rivers at all large enough to show on this scale map. To me, that says about 1/4 of the continent is howling desert wasteland, or I would put a river in it somewhere, possibly from that major central peak cluster to the notched bay on the NE coast.

Well I hope never!
The good part with imagination is that your can play the same game but envision events in a different way. With 3D environment, it will become a video game more than anything else, where there's no more room for imagination.
don't you think?

We are already there. Tools get more advanced every day. I have to agree with Dain though:  A 3D environment implies an artist outside of your own head working laboriously to beforehand create what you see, and robbing your brain of the pleasure of visualizing that for yourself.
When the day comes where I can project what I see in my mind, well, OK that'll be a game changing.

Yes I have seen the possible shift coming since the Occulas Rift and other devices get closer to public launch. I can see both sides of the argument and I agree with both, I also hope the any 3D environment would be able to be edited by the GM.

The main reason I ask was I thought "boy it would be cool if I could zoom into you artwork above and get a view from inside that castle courtyard. How much sun would there be in the courtyard during summer vs winter? How many people could fit in there?"
I think you can see the advantages of such questions being able to be answered, but again I think that is a ways off as it would take some powerful software and computers to transform you picture above directly into a 3D Environment.

You could already use 3D rendering software to do that. Zoom around in it, move or change the light sources, render from different angles. E.g. Daz Studio is free. But then you need 3D models of the structures, and if you want to actually construct those models it's quite a bit of work. I constantly want to do more of this, but the time requirement is not really justifiable in terms of what it adds to the game. Writing up material is more productive.

At some point of advancement, you're just playing a computer game that happens to have a human AI.

I tend to agree. Part of the fun of tabletop is creating that shared illusion and collaborating to bring something "to life." Once you take that part out, it's almost the GM marching the lab mice through his vision of the play. It also takes the narrative portion out, and since a good GM can use voice as part of the setting you're losing that as well.

Sketchup is also free, and VERY easy to use.

As an example, when discussing plans to build a new house in the place where the last one burned down last winter, I made it as easy as I could on the contractor. I did a 3D rendering of the house we wanted in Sketchup, went into Google Earth and grabbed imagery of the land, placed it in the proper position, added some trees from the 3D Warehouse (basically a HUGE collection of free Sketchup models), added a few "textures" (color patterns on surfaces), and took sceenshots to send to him to illustrate any points we were discussing.

A 3 bedroom, 2 bath, 1920 sq. ft. house, on its proper footprint, with nearby trees that had to be chopped down or avoided, along with location of the well, the driveway, various outbuildings, etc..... maybe an hour and a half. Granted, I have been using it for a few years, and like anything else it gets faster and easier with practice, but still...

A castle is a huge and complex collection of structures, so that would take a while. But getting the sight lines right for the bar fight that's about to happen? You can build and furnish the local bar in under an hour, with practice.

Note: I SUCK CANAL WATER as an artist. Yes, it's *that* easy.

To be sure, it's probably not worth the trouble except in cases of:

1. Very simple structures, and/or
2. Places the party will return to over and over.

So I have been watching Scarecrow & Mrs King (while still a lot of fun, it doesn't age very well) and the maps they have in the "Agency" offices are the kind of maps I like; lots of color and raised (the mountains stick up higher than the plains, etc...). I would love some game maps like that. If I am not mistaken, they are old Rand McNally made maps, does anyone know for sure? These would be the maps that would be in classrooms across America (and possibly other countries) in the 80's.

I think Rand McNally stopped making them, but there are others you can purchase.  Here are a couple to get you started.  Just do a search for "3D relief maps" or "raised relief maps" and you should find enough to your hearts content.

As far as having one made for a fictional world, I know of none.  Perhaps a 3D printer?

The internet is large and contains many unexpected things.

http://www.summitmaps.com/departments/custom-raised-relief-maps.aspx (http://www.summitmaps.com/departments/custom-raised-relief-maps.aspx)
Just $4000-6000 for 20-30" map. A bargain.  :o

http://www.howardmodels.com/Topography/index.html (http://www.howardmodels.com/Topography/index.html)
You can order an unpainted map, with just the relief. Prices from $25-545 per square foot, minimum five square feet. Top price includes complex layout, painting, roads, walkways, and model buildings and trees.

You could also just print multiple copies of your map on thick paper or cardstock. Cut along contour lines with a craft knife. Glue layers on with spray glue. Not as cool, more work, save $1000's.
