RM1/2 Half Elves
« on: January 17, 2017, 12:39:37 PM »
Whilst I know I can just make whatever ruling I want, I was wondering how other people interpret Profession restrictions for Half Elves. Should they be treated as a type of elf and be restricted accordingly, or, since there are no restrictions specifically listed, are half elves free to choose any profession they wish?

What Professional restrictions are you speaking of?  I know of no restrictions on professions for any race.  Sure some are better than others, but if you want to be a War Troll Dancer go ahead, just be prepared to have poor stat modifiers for the most important skills you have.

I think I know what you mean. RM2 ChL There was an option to restrict the professions of each race. Humans had no restrictions, elves could be restricted to any profession without SD as a prime requisite.

Half Elves are not mentioned. I personally if I was going to restrict professions along these lines would make it dependent on which culture the half elf was brought up amongst. If it lived amongst elves then place the elven restrictions on the half elf.

RM2 had profession restrictions for races, and I think the Companions followed suit when presenting new races. I had forgotten this, ran into it just yesterday. I have as many cultural restrictions on profession, as I have racial restrictions.
We ask the hard questions here, because they keep us too busy to worry about the hard questions in the real world, and we can go with the answers we like the best.

I couldn't recall any profession restrictions based on race for RM2.  But then Peter's post jogged a memory.  I think there's an optional rule for Elves where the Prime Req couldn't be SD.  We never saw a reason to restrict professions based on race.  If the elf wants to be a profession where the Prime Req is SD, that's fine.  It will be a fun challenge for him to play, or he plans his skills accordingly, or perhaps has a magical item that grants a bonus to SD.

Yes, that's it - in the original version of RM, there were suggested restrictions on certain races having certain professions. These were relaxed in later Companions and later versions of RM.

I would probably go along the "which culture" line myself, but I just wonder what the original intention was.

I am only guessing but I would have said the original intention was that the original RM was meant to be a set of house rules for D&D and that has always had race/class restrictions. So it was a D&D hang over.

Really?  Wow, never knew that.

Personally I do not limit classes by race, and I also use the sneaky elf rule as SD is a prime requisite for Stalk & Hide.

I feel if the player wants to be a bad thief, go ahead and take the War Troll, but remember Everyone Hates you, and you are not very good at sneaking, or Hiding.  :-)  Then again, I try to prevent Power Gaming as well, so give me a good reason why you are a war troll living in the capital city of the human empire.  Back storey is something I insist the players develop and work with me on.
